StillSecure Announces Virtual Security Services

ProtectPoint VSS secures public and private clouds, leverages VMware's VMsafe APIs

(Superior, Colo. - January 26, 2010) - StillSecure', provider of secure network infrastructure solutions, today announced ProtectPoint VSST (Virtual Security Service), a new managed security service that allows data centers, hosting providers and colocation facilities to provide secure virtual environments for their customers. VSS can also be a key ingredient in building a private cloud environment for enterprises. Historically, virtual environments have lacked even basic security measures but with StillSecure's new VSS offering, public and private clouds can now be secured with a full suite of virtual managed security services.

According to Gartner, Inc., "Virtualization offers IT organizations opportunities to reduce cost and increase agility; however, if this is done without implementing best practices for security, then resultant security incidents will increase costs and reduce agility. Security must be 'baked in' from conception, not addressed as an afterthought."1

StillSecure's ProtectPoint VSS provides firewall and intrusion detection/prevention (IDS/IPS) services for detecting and blocking network attacks. Unlike other security solutions that can only monitor the physical-to-virtual connection, ProtectPoint VSS leverages VMware's VMsafe APIs to access the hypervisor and secure virtual-to-virtual connections within the virtual environment. Best of all, StillSecure's SAS-70 Type II certified security operations center (SOC) manages all of the operations for a low monthly or annual fee.

Because ProtectPoint VSS was built to scale, a single VSS instance protects all virtual machines in the virtual environment. Data centers, hosting providers and colocation facilities with multi-tenant, multi-customer environments can take advantage of this scalability to decrease costs and increase operational efficiencies while generating additional revenue. Although multiple customers are securely managed in a virtual environment, policies can be set on a per tenant model. Enterprises can leverage VSS to protect their growing virtual environments and simultaneously outsource the heavy lifting of monitoring and managing the security process.

"StillSecure has been a strategic partner for us and has continually provided us with top rate products and services that allow us to deliver cost-effective security solutions to our customers," said Jeff Spalding, Executive Vice President of Market Operations, Peak 10, Inc. "With this new VSS offering, StillSecure is providing yet another solution that allows us to scale and deliver strong security solutions for our virtualization and cloud offerings."

Roger Barranco, Chief Technology Officer and Vice President of Operations for Host.net, the first StillSecure partner to deploy a managed virtual security solution for customers, said, "StillSecure understands the importance of layering security onto the virtual network. Using their logical security service allows us to protect our customers from all angles in our SAS 70 Type II and PCI certified data centers."

In addition, ProtectPoint VSS takes advantage of VMware's VMotion technology, which leverages the complete virtualization of servers, storage and networking to move an entire running virtual machine instantaneously from one physical server to another. This is especially beneficial during disaster recovery situations. There is no impact to end users and no reconfiguration required for security to remain on each virtual machine.

"All of the security considerations that apply to a physical network apply to the virtual environment, yet it is mistakenly assumed that going virtual means you're automatically secure," said Steve Harris, Vice President of Managed Security Services at StillSecure. "With ProtectPoint VSS, we're providing an easy to implement, scalable method for securing the virtual environment. And, perhaps best of all, StillSecure manages the entire process through our award-winning ProtectPoint managed services platform."
