Millions Of Non-Anthem Customers Also Hit By Anthem Breach

Blue Cross Blue Shield customers -- as many as 8.8 to 18.8 million of them -- might have also had their data compromised.

Healthcare insurer Anthem has updated its original estimate of how many customers' records were compromised in the data breach reported earlier this month. The original estimate of 80 million has been sharpened to 78.8 million -- and, more importantly, they announced that from 8.8 million to 18.8 million of those individuals are not customers of Anthem.

Reason being, Anthem is part of a national network of "independently run Blue Cross Blue Shield plans through which BCBS customers can receive medical services when they are in an area where BCBS is operated by a different company," as Reuters reports.

@Marilyn  So true. And it seems like we never really understand how this stuff works until there's a big data breach. Remember Community Health Systems? I didn't even know that there WERE healthcare providers that were publicly traded companies until CHS had a huge breach....and their stock went up.

@RyanSepe  Right. If there's anything recent infosec history has taught us, it's that we cannot, cannot, CANNOT ignore the security posture of our business partners. I don't know that anyone's gotten that quite right yet -- there are certain risks/damages that even the best liability contract can't transfer -- but it's got to be on the list of priorities.

This is a prime example of getting burnt when the secondary company, in this case BCBS, is not in the crossfire. It is important to perform risk assessments on all business partners to minimize the risk for exfiltration of data. Even by performing the assessment you are not ensuring data security but you are performing due diligence that can be communicated out if needed. As well as, ensuring that the company is protecting the data with the appropriate safeguards.

A functionality that comes to mind is the fundamentals of a VPN. If the company on the other side of the VPN gets breached it decreases the security posture of the company supplying the VPN substantially.
