Russian Hacker Pleads Guilty to Bank Fraud

The hacker ran a botnet that spread 'NeverQuest' malware for three years and collected millions of banking credentials.

Stanislav Vitaliyevich Lisov, a Russian citizen accused of using the NeverQuest banking Trojan to steal login information from victims, has pled guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit computer hacking in Manhattan Federal Court. The crime carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison.

According to statements made in court, Lisov — also known as "Black," a/k/a "Blackf" — was responsible for his part of creating and administering a botnet infected with NeverQuest between June 2012 and January 2015. He also was responsible for maintaining the infrastructure of and managing a network of servers containing lists of millions of stolen login credentials – including usernames, passwords, and security questions and answers – for victims' accounts on banking and other financial websites.

Lisov was arrested in Spain on January 13, 2017, and on January 19, 2018 was extradited from Spain to the United States. He is scheduled for sentencing on June 27, 2019.

I definitely agree with your sentiment personally. However, it is 5 years MAXIMUM. That's the worst case scenario, signifying that in many cases the sentencing will be less than 5 years. To some that 360K a year mark may be worth 1-3 years in prison especially with many of them taking plea deals.

There is the loss of freedom.  An article here postulated that a successful hacker can earn $360,000 per year.  Not a bad gig if you can get it but - if caught - one cannot walk down to the deli and get coffee.  I like my home and enjoy sleeping in a good bed at night.  So there is THAT risk too.  Pardon me but ain't worth it.  So 5 years in a can somewhere is indeed major.

If 5 years is the maximum received, then I don't think its going to divert those doing this for their livelihood to stop their nefarious ways. I think even one year would be discouraging as long as this would be a common practice. Most get away with their hacking.

You present the idea that crime doesn't pay and there are repercussions but on the other hand you show that for this type of crime the sentencing is minimal. Hopefully sentencing would not be minimal, however your point makes sense.

To really make some headway, I believe that some of the guilty hackers need to have an example made of them. If 5 years is the maximum received, then I don't think its going to divert those doing this for their livelihood to stop their nefarious ways.

Agreed, unforutnately advertising the guilty plea is a double-edged sword. You present the idea that crime doesn't pay and there are repercussions but on the other hand you show that for this type of crime the sentencing is minimal.
