BASKING RIDGE, N.J. " Global enterprises have a strong ally in the prevention and mitigation of Internet-based attacks on corporate networks. Verizon Business is extending its suite of in-the-cloud Denial of Service (DOS) Defense solutions, which includes both Detection and Mitigation offerings, to Canada, and is expanding its proactive Detection Service to 14 European and eight Asia-Pacific countries--bringing the company's total DOS protection coverage to 24 countries.

Its latest offering, DOS Defense Detection, which helps safeguard customer networks at the backbone by proactively scanning Internet traffic flow for suspicious activity, is now available in: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan, U.K. and the U.S.

The company's Mitigation Service, which is designed to divert malicious traffic away from a customer's network, is already offered in these areas. Denial-of-service attacks occur when a hacker exploits multiple systems, and then leverages them to coordinate an attack against a single target such as a Web site server, e-mail or an enterprise's entire network. The hacker's goal is to overwhelm networks and disrupt the flow of legitimate network traffic, rendering the systems unable to perform their intended function.

"Denial-of-service and other Internet-based attacks can severely impede essential business operations and can have a huge financial impact on an organization," said Michael Marcellin, vice president of global managed solutions, Verizon.

"Verizon DOS Defense brings together our renowned global security practice and our expansive global IP backbone. The combination of these two unique assets gives us an unprecedented view into the threat landscape, allowing us to help our customers thwart attacks and maintain essential business operations," Marcellin said.

"Multinational companies need tools and services to easily identify and stop network-layer DOS attacks without interrupting the flow of legitimate traffic across their global footprint," said Bernt Ostergaard, research director at Current Analysis. "Verizon Business now provides a unique DOS Defense capability in North America, Europe and Asia Pacific that is tightly integrated with its security portal and comes with tough SLAs to match."

Helping Companies Shore Up Their IP Defense with DOS Solutions Verizon DOS Defense is an "in-the-cloud" or network-based, fully managed service that includes two complementary capabilities: detection and mitigation. The detection function, by scanning Internet traffic flow and identifying malicious traffic patterns, provides reports and alerts based on the traffic analysis. This allows a customer to spot an attack in its early stages before it affects its communications infrastructure, enabling quick and effective mitigation.

The mitigation function, by diverting malicious traffic away from a company's network, helps the company to maintain the availability of its Internet resources for legitimate users.

Verizon DOS Defense is ideal for medium to large enterprises and government agencies, which must remain vigilant against cyber attacks. Powered by Verizon's global IP network and supported by security experts around the globe, the service relies on several security centers that reside on the Verizon Business global IP backbone. Malicious traffic on a customer network is redirected to these centers before it can cause damage.

These offerings are engineered to be consistent around the globe, and are backed by rigorous service level agreements (SLAs) that stipulate a 15-minute response from Verizon Business upon attack notification. The services can be purchased together or separately, based on customer preferences. Customers using both services have no premises equipment to manage as all hardware is in the network. As with its other in-the-cloud offerings, Verizon Business is helping customers achieve eco-friendly benefits such as reduced energy usage.

Verizon Business Security Solutions Enterprises and government agencies rely on Verizon Business to help them manage security risk and protect critical company assets.
