Norman Releases Antimalware Gateway

Norman Network Protection (NNP) Appliance version 3.6 provides real-time, front-end protection solution for LANs
Oslo, Norway 21 April, 2009 - Norman ASA announced today the release of Norman Network Protection (NNP) " Appliance version 3.6 — an antimalware gateway. NNP delivers proactive, real-time protection for today's corporate networks and eliminates threats without affecting workforce productivity.

Norman Network Protection utilizes leading malware detection and analysis technology to provide a real-time, front-end protection solution for the entire LAN. Multiple protocols are scanned to stop malicious programs, keeping the network clean and allowing safe traffic to pass through quickly and efficiently. NNP combines signature-based security with innovative technology to proactively stop malware.

NNP delivers centralized protection for all units in a network and provides protection against potential security risks, whether resident in the network or introduced by an external source. By placing NNP between the Internet and the local network—and between critical LAN segments—every computer is protected, and malware being downloaded is stopped before it reaches its destination.

In addition to being independent of network topology and transparent to other network entities, NNP uses powerful Norman SandBox' and DNA Matching technology to detect new malware, examine multiple protocols for threats, and reduce latency by scanning incoming and outgoing traffic on the fly. Norman DNA Matching is a new proactive technology and method for identifying the viral profile of all kinds of malicious programs and works in combination with Norman's patented SandBox technology.

The NNP Appliance supports Gigabit Ethernet capacity on multiple protocols. High-performance inbound and outbound real-time scans of CIFS and SMB, Windows protocols and HTTP, FTP, SMTP, POP3, RPC, TFTP and IRC. The support of internet and local area network protocols positions the NNP among the most suitable antimalware scanners in the industry. The gateway is managed through a web based management system that instantly informs about the status of the network presented trough an intuitive graphical user interface.

"Customers and partners have asked us for an efficient antimalware product that quickly integrates with their network and secures the infrastructure from the Internet, protecting business critical areas of networks from being infected by malicious code. That's precisely what the NNP does", says Arvid Gomez, Vice President OEM and Technology. "The combination of NNP and SandBox analysis provides a unique solution for organizations to defend themselves against emerging threats."

Today's threat landscape shows that targeted attacks exploiting zero day vulnerabilities make it very important to get information about the malware's actions as fast as possible. As the first antimalware gateway in the world, NNP includes a detailed malware analysis of suspicious files and classifies them. The detailed information about the malware makes it possible to take action to protect against further spreading and faster cleaning. The analysis of the suspicious file includes file and registry changes, network service actions and malware categorization (viruses, worms, Trojans, backdoors, spyware etc.).

"By installing NNP as a transparent network malware scanner, data packets on known malware-carrying protocols will be scanned. Malware will be stopped and isolated before it reaches its targets. NNP will isolate the malware, right down to the specific malicious file. This is crucial to avoid spreading of malware in the customer's networks", says Arvid Gomez VP Technology and OEM.

Main features:

  • Network antimalware scanner that proactively detects and stops known and unknown spyware, Trojans and viruses.
  • High performance scanning of real-time LAN and Internet traffic with minimal latency.
  • Active protection with block and exclude on IP and Mac address and VLAN level.
  • Inbound and outbound stream scanning of Internet and local networks supports multiple protocols: FTP, HTTP, SMTP, POP3, RPC, TFTP, IRC and CIFS/SMB.
  • Fast and easy deployment at the core or edge of the network.
  • Malware outbreak prevention and malware damage control.
  • Detailed pinpointing of malware source (host and file path).
  • Supports unlimited numbers of VLAN's
  • Easy administration through a web-based graphical interface and fully automated updates, logs, reports, statistics and alerts.

NNP employs the power of Linux to maximize throughput and availability. The scanning engine and virus definition files are automatically updated on-the-fly without any down time or manual operations.
