Vehicle security researcher Charlie Miller joins IOActive Advisory Board

PRESS RELEASE
Seattle, USA — December 17, 2014 – IOActive, Inc., the leading global provider of hardware, software, and wetware security services, announced it is expanding its Vehicle Security Service practice today. The practice – backed by years of cutting edge research from IOActive Labs – will deliver cyber security strategies and risk mitigation countermeasures to vehicle manufacturers and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). IOActive has also invested in a garage within its state-of-the-art hardware lab, designed specifically for researching vehicle and transportation security.
As digital technology in vehicles continues to grow, so does the threat posed by malicious software and hardware manipulation. IOActive invented and leads the vehicle security research category. IOActive’s Vehicle Security Service fuses more than two years of primary research with hands-on experience working with some of the world’s largest vehicle manufacturers and OEMs.
“Vehicles are no longer purely mechanical entities, but machines controlled by a multitude of computers at any given moment. Unlike PC-based attacks, malicious intent on a vehicle can result in financial loss, as well as in personal injury. IOActive is proud to be on the forefront of securing the next generation of personal and public transportation,” said Chris Valasek, director of vehicle security research for IOActive.
IOActive’s Vehicle Security Service practice will deliver:
· Secure Development Lifecycle (SDL) for vehicles
· Vehicle architecture assessments
· Full vehicle penetration testing
· Vehicle back office penetration testing
· Software testing
· Client-sponsored private research
· ECU (single purpose, multipurpose, gateway, infotainment, telematics) testing
As part of today’s announcement, IOActive is also pleased to report that Charlie Miller has joined the IOActive Advisory Board.
“As we expand our new Vehicle Security Service practice, which harnesses the expertise and years of research borne out of IOActive Labs, I am extremely pleased to have Charlie join the Advisory Board,” said Jennifer Steffens, chief executive officer for IOActive. “Charlie’s knowledge of vehicle security, combined with his years of information security research, is something we will look to leverage from him as our trusted advisor.”
“Chris Valasek and I have been performing cutting-edge vehicle security research for the last two to three years. I'm happy to provide guidance to IOActive as it continues its world class program to help design and test automotive systems for security vulnerabilities. This safety-critical field is becoming more and more important as cars become more connected and the safety of passengers is at stake,” said Charlie Miller.
Charlie Miller is a computer security engineer with Twitter. Prior to his work at Twitter, he spent five years working for the National Security Agency. In 2008, he won the top prize at CanSecWest during the Pwn2Own challenge. Recently, he has become known, together with Chris Valasek, for his research in automotive security. He holds a Bachelors in Mathematics with a minor in Philosophy from Northeast Missouri State (now Truman State University), and a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Notre Dame.
