Claranet Buys NotSoSecure

Acquisition continues the MSP's push into security services.

Claranet, a managed service provider with services focused on western Europe and Brazil, has purchased NotSoSecure, a firm specializing in penetration testing and ethical hacker training.

The purchase follows Claranet's 2017 acquisition of SEC-1, a security firm based in the United Kingdom. According to a Claranet statement announcing the purchase, the security acquisitions, together with the opening of a security operations center in Portugal, are part of the company's intention to increase their overall security services capabilities.

At the same time, NotSoSecure executives stated that they intend to use the resources of Claranet to build their business globally, with a special focus on expanding their presence in the US market.

Claranet's Purchasing Trend
I'm familiar with NotSoSecure and in this case, I hope the purchase allows them to accomplish their goals.  Unlike some company procurement machines, Claranet's track record has been pretty interesting.  For example, last year they bought French company Oxalide who has developers active in the Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) communities.  A great small company with a good attitude (OpenBSD experts, too, and I love me some pufferfish).  Previous procurement of ISPs, including Netscalibur which was noted as the largest UK ISP acquisition of 2003, point to more dollar growth than technology growth and to some extent absorption of those companies into the Claranet infrastructure.  Like many similar tech companies driven by acquisition rather than individual innovation, one is left to wonder what, without all the acquisitions, does Claranet actually do?  Props to Charles Nasser who founded the company in 1996 for still holding the reins but for companies like Oxalide and NotSoSecure who have awesome engineers and contribute to their respective communities, I hope this move promotes growth rather than stifling their personalities.
