Throwing Out an Idea
Government's right to surveillance should stop at my recycling bin
4:15 PM -- Don't get me wrong. I like video surveillance. But this time, I think the local British government has gone too far.
According to an article in the London Telegraph, a British seaside town is now putting surveillance cameras in trash bags in order to find out whether citizens are following rules about putting out their garbage.
To enforce the new rules, a camera will be placed in a rubbish bag and left in an alleyway to blend in with the surroundings to catch offenders. Those filmed breaking the rules will be given a ticking off.
Repeat offenders could be handed a fixed penalty notice or even be taken to court and fined up to £1,000.
Is it just me, or does this seem a bit excessive? What's next -- pocketcams to monitor littering? Bathroom cams to see if we're using too much tissue?
We'd be willing to bet that our readers have heard of similar -- and equally hilarious -- "excessive uses of security" in their companies or communities. Will you share them with us? If so, please post a message to the board attached to this blog. All postings are anonymous, and we promise we won't "trash" anything you say.
Or at least, if we do, we'll be sure to get it out to the curb in time.
