PRESS RELEASE

NEWTON, Mass., Aug. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Attivio, Inc. today announced it has released version 1.5 of its unified information access platform, the Attivio Active Intelligence Engine(TM) (AIE). The updated version of AIE boasts modules for Classification, Sentiment and Optical Character Recognition (OCR), as well as significant new features including high-availability ingestion and querying, guaranteed indexing, and next-generation security.

AIE v1.5's enhanced security model eliminates the need for an enterprise search engine plus a relational database to manage complex document-level permissioning by storing content, groups and users as separate tables in its Universal Index. This allows significant cost savings and near-real-time access control updates because there is no need to re-index as changes occur.

The new modules in AIE v1.5 will change the way information is indexed and distributed within the enterprise, equating to more relevant results being available to the most appropriate and authorized users. These new module capabilities include:

-- Classification Module --provides a state-of-the-art solution for classifying documents to a set of categories. For example, in the media industry, information could be classified by news categories (local, world, business) or classified ads (community, housing, for sale), etc. -- Sentiment Module --extracts and measures the sentiment or "attitude" of documents as well as the entities within documents. The attitude may be the person's judgment (e.g. 'positive' vs. 'negative') or emotional tone (e.g. 'objective' vs. 'subjective'). -- OCR Module --ingests text from scanned documents and images, including hand-written with high accuracy. Supported formats include PDF, TIFF, and JPEG. It can also be used to extract tabular data from supported file formats (e.g. tables foundin PDFs).

"The sheer volume of structured data and unstructured content that exists in the average enterprise today presents a significant challenge for organizations to index, organize and route the information they have in house, let alone address the influx of new information on a daily basis," said Sid Probstein, CTO of Attivio. "With AIE's Classification and Sentiment Modules, content is automatically classified by category and measured by sentiment, enabling our customers to identify and process the relevant information they need, when they need it."

"In information management, there is a delicate and difficult balance between providing users with access to the information they need while still protecting the integrity of the data. Organizations are often faced with a dual challenge: they need to empower users to have immediate access to the most relevant information, but also need to ensure only those users with certain privileges or permissions are allowed to access it," said Mark Beyer, Research VP at Gartner.

Other significant additions and enhancements to Attivio's Active Intelligence Engine include:

-- Certified Multi-Node Configurations -- provides high-availability ingestion and querying (formerly available on a custom basis), guaranteed indexing (fault-tolerant ingestion) and dynamic load-balanced content processing that allows adding nodes for compute-intensive content processing, without halting ingestion or requiring restart. -- Pluggable Relevancy Logic -- allows customers to plug-in their own customized relevancy policies to control document relevancy scoring for query results. -- Index Backup and Restore Service -- enhances performance for backup and restore functions and includes comprehensive multi-index, multi-node support and backup and restoration of index types and objects. -- Microsoft Exchange Connector Update -- now supports crawling Microsoft Exchange mailboxes and public folders to simplify the bulk extraction of email messages and documents.

Attivio also announced it is now accepting applications for participation in the Beta program for its industry-first AIE SQL engine, which launches in September.

The new AIE SQL Module will let customers write and execute SQL queries against AIE directly or from existing enterprise BI tools and applications. The module will also include AIE query extensions that serve the full spectrum of enterprise information, from ad-hoc search queries to structured reports and a new frontier for true unified information access queries.
