When you want to move a lot of information to a human endpoint, it's hard to beat the bandwidth of a book. Used in everything from recreation to university education, a full bookshelf (whether paper or digital) is part of the requirement for any well-prepared professional.

Dark Reading asked users on social media which books they would recommend for professionals looking to increase their level of knowledge and understanding.

The books recommended go across the spectrum from novels that teach new methods to books the explore broad social issues to hands-on books for developers. In every case, though, the book listed teaches something important about security and its application in the enterprise.

Are there books that have been an important part of your security education? If so, we'd like to know. Share those critical books with us in the comments — you'll be helping your peers build a better bookshelf for their security libraries.

Another Great Cybersecurity Books Resource
The Cybersecurity Canon of Books is maintained by Palo Alto Networks with this goal:

"To identify a list of must-read books for all cybersecurity practitioners – be they from industry, government or academia — where the content is timeless, genuinely represents an aspect of the community that is true and precise, reflects the highest quality and, if not read, will leave a hole in the cybersecurity professional's education that will make the practitioner incomplete.

Some great reads and Palo Alto takes it all quite seriously. The have an entire committee set up to review the books, and anyone can submit a book for their review and possible inclusion.

Re: Great picks
I'm sure I recommended The Cuckoo's Egg here before.

One compelling aspect of the story is that it took place when events transpired over longer time periods - one closer to our human experience.  Stoll was able to follow the attacker's activities in real time, as most progressed no faster than a person can type.

Good list
Obviously everyones version will be slightly different but personally I would have to have Mitnick's Art of Deception. Read it many uears ago, around the same time as Cuckoos Egg, and totally blew me away as I was fairly new to the industry at the time and never come across social engineering before.

Great picks
The Cuckoo's Egg is a wonderful if terrifying book - if only for the complacency so many military sites and sys admins felt about their passwords, user accounts and walls.  Incredible and fun read but full of lessons that still apply.

Everything You Need to Know About DNS Attacks
It's important to understand DNS, potential attacks against it, and the tools and techniques required to defend DNS infrastructure. This report answers all the questions you were afraid to ask. Domain Name Service (DNS) is a critical part of any organization's digital infrastructure, but it's also one of the least understood. DNS is designed to be invisible to business professionals, IT stakeholders, and many security professionals, but DNS's threat surface is large and widely targeted. Attackers are causing a great deal of damage with an array of attacks such as denial of service, DNS cache poisoning, DNS hijackin, DNS tunneling, and DNS dangling. They are using DNS infrastructure to take control of inbound and outbound communications and preventing users from accessing the applications they are looking for. To stop attacks on DNS, security teams need to shore up the organization's security hygiene around DNS infrastructure, implement controls such as DNSSEC, and monitor DNS traffic
