US Officials: Russian Hackers Could Spread Online Rumors Of Voter Fraud
US authorities ask election officials to be alert to false documents posted online to influence public perception.
US authorities have warned that Russian hackers may try to spread rumors of voter fraud by posting false documents online, reports Reuters.
State and local election bodies have been told to be alert to such a move to undermine the November 8 US presidential election, although authorities maintain attackers can't actually interfere with the election process and influence the outcome.
Russia-backed hackers have been active in the past months targeting, among others, the Democratic Party networks and states’ voter database. But authorities believe no damage to the electoral process was done.
