UpGuard Launches Breachsight Breach Discovery Engine
Cyber risk company unveils solution to locate, analyze, and remediate data exposures

PRESS RELEASE
MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA - March 20, 2018 - UpGuard, the company behind the world's first cyber resilience platform, today launched BreachSight, a product which allows companies to locate their unintentionally exposed data online.
The development of BreachSight comes as a natural response to the reality of the current state of data security; that data breaches are occurring at an epidemic scale and no solution exists that can swiftly identify these exposures. In the last year alone, UpGuard has helped secure over 335 million publicly exposed records from entities such as the Republican National Convention, Verizon, INSCOM, Booz Allen Hamilton and many more. BreachSight automates the techniques developed by UpGuard’s research teams to identify publicly exposed data sets allowing the team to secure even more records than previously possible.
"Our team is uncovering data breaches every day because of one simple fact: Organizations don’t know what data they have, who has it, and where it exists," said Mike Baukes, co-founder and co-CEO of UpGuard. "BreachSight will allow customers to regain control of their private data by providing total visibility over their digital footprint.”
Rather than reactively monitoring the dark web for information that has already been exploited, UpGuard BreachSight proactively discovers exposed datasets and aids in the analysis of these exposures. This breach discovery engine continuously searches for exposed datasets using strategic keyword lists provided by customers and is continually refined by UpGuard’s team of analysts, using expertise and techniques gleaned from years of breach research.
"There's a huge wealth of data of all kinds out there being generated by basically every company with a digital footprint. Something that hasn't been done until now is mapping that data properly to look for patterns, and identify where the internal processes are breaking down or where a slip-up is likely to occur," Baukes said. "Often, our team's successes have come from looking holistically at a company like that and putting ourselves in the shoes of a systems administrator, developer, or even a product manager. You might have this world-class team, but the PM's got an online Kanban board sitting out in the open that he's using for notes, and it's full of API keys, but nobody thought to look for it because the company believes everything's internal. It's examples like that, which are things happening in the real world, that nobody's had an answer for until now."
BreachSight excels in identifying a variety of data points including exposed credentials, customer, employee, and financial data, insecure third-party apps, and others. The product also provides intelligence on information that may have been leaked by a third-party or partner.
BreachSight extends the capabilities of UpGuard’s existing vendor risk management product, CyberRisk, using what that product has learned about internal security and vendor relationships to enhance the breach detection process. While CyberRisk discovers machine configurations that make data breaches more likely and signal poor information security practices, UpGuard BreachSight looks directly at data that is already exposed to the internet. Together, these products provide the the fullest picture of an organization’s susceptibility to breach using only non-invasive methods.
Since its inception in 2012, UpGuard has secured hundreds of millions of publicly exposed records. Enterprises including NASA, the New York Stock Exchange, RackSpace, ADP and many others rely on the UpGuard Cyber Resilience platform.
