The storm brewing over the Democratic National Committee (DNC) breach refuses to die down with the FBI now saying it suspects Russia to be behind the act. The Daily Beast quotes persons close to the investigation indicating that the intention of the breach and subsequent leaks was to tilt the US election in favor of Donald Trump who is seen as close to the current Russian government.

About 20,000 internal DMC emails, with sensitive content, were posted on WikiLeaks on Friday just before the Democratic convention got underway in Philadelphia.

“Given Donald Trump’s well known admiration for Putin and his belittling of NATO, the Russians have both the means and the motive to engage in a hack of the DNC and the dump of its emails prior to the Democratic Convention, said Rep. Adam Schiff.

The FBI first alerted DNC to the breach in April and authorities indicated that Russian hacker groups were likely to be behind them. Cybersecurity firms CrowdStrike and ThreatConnect confirmed this on the basis of the techniques used. The latter believes Guccifer 2.0, which claims to be behind the WikiLeaks emails, is a Russian-government operation, says The Daily Beast.
