Apple Employees in China Detained for Selling User Data

Chinese authorities in Beijing have detained 22 people suspected of privacy infringement and illegally obtaining personal information, SecurityWeek reported. This follows months of investigation across more than four provinces.

Twenty of those detained were Apple employees suspected of collecting customers' names, Apple IDs, phone numbers, and other data using the company's internal system. Authorities seized their tools, and destroyed their online network this past weekend. It is not clear whether the information belonged to Chinese or global users.

The scammers allegedly sold pieces of personal data for prices between 10 yuan ($1.50) and 180 yuan ($26.50) apiece. Overall, the operation was worth more than 50 million yuan ($7.36 million).
