Check Point Software Technologies today announced it will add security controls for more than 50,000 Web 2.0 widgets and more than 4,500 Internet applications by acquiring the application classification and signature database of FaceTime Communications.

The database purchase, along with new product capabilities that Check Point has developed, will enable the company to offer greater control of application usage and better security in emerging application environments, such as social networks. Check Point will offer this new level of security controls as a software blade that will be available for all gateways.

"This granular application control will enable better use of Web 2.0 technologies safely and securely," said Gil Shwed, chairman and chief executive officer at Check Point.

"Acquiring FaceTime's application database allows Check Point to create a solution, which enables enterprises to monitor, control and diffuse network traffic, including those from Web 2.0 applications," said Charles Kolodgy, research director for Security Products at IDC.

Pricing and availability for this new software blade will be announced soon in 2010.
