PRESS RELEASE

NATICK, Mass., July 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Nasuni(TM), creator of the industry's first gateway to the cloud for primary storage, today announced the availability of a free white paper, Understanding Security in Cloud Storage, which addresses the top security concerns in the cloud and offers information on how businesses can take advantage of cloud storage without compromising security.

The white paper explores security in the context of different types of cloud offerings available: software as a service, cloud computing and cloud storage. Data encryption at rest is singled out as a unique feature of cloud storage, which enables a superior security model. The OpenPGP security standard is discussed at length in the context of data encryption.

"Many businesses that can benefit from the opportunity to significantly reduce costs while providing reliable, on-demand storage are holding back from implementing cloud storage because of concerns about the security of their data," said Andres Rodriguez, CEO of Nasuni. "While no environment is completely secure, cloud storage does not inherently increase security risks to businesses. Much of the fear stems from a basic lack of understanding about cloud security options and a natural reaction by people regarding new technology. Our white paper seeks to alleviate the fears and a clear understanding by identifying the risks of cloud storage and illuminating the security models that can be used to mitigate them."

Nasuni makes the Nasuni Filer - a virtual NAS that offers secure connections to major cloud storage providers. At the heart of Nasuni's security model is OpenPGP with the AES-256 cryptographic standard, approved by the U.S. National Security Agency, to compress and encrypt each file. Customer files stored in the cloud via the Nasuni Filer remain completely secure. Unlike data loss, where the cloud storage provider may simply lose data due to hardware, connectivity or other failure, data encryption at the customer site protects files from malicious attack. This renders files unreadable while in transit and off-premises. Files are sent over a secure channel and remain encrypted in the cloud, and the customer retains sole control of the decryption keys.
