HP Unveils Real-Time Application Security Testing Tool
HP WebInspect Real-Time observes running application code in real time during testing to more accurately find vulnerabilities

PRESS RELEASE
HP today announced the release of HP WebInspect Real-Time, a dynamic application security testing solution that observes running application code in real time during testing to more accurately find vulnerabilities.
HP WebInspect Real-Time, based on HP WebInspect 9.1, works with HP Fortify SecurityScope to attack and observe an application during security testing, enabling testers to pinpoint line-of-code detail where vulnerabilities exist.
Dynamic analysis solutions execute automated security attacks against a running application to discover and validate vulnerabilities in its code and configuration. While this approach provides the quickest way to begin finding and fixing security vulnerabilities, when used in isolation it can be ineffective in identifying the source code file and line of code responsible for the security vulnerability.
HP WebInspect Real-Time can attack an application through automated external security tests, and then gather internal, code-level vulnerability information by observing the attacks in the code as they happen. This real-time cooperation of technologies results in higher accuracy in detecting an exploitable vulnerability, and more actionable information for remediating it.
“Dynamic application security testing (DAST) solutions scan web applications and identify attack patterns that can exploit applications, but even when a vulnerability is detected, DAST cannot point to the specific line of source code where the vulnerability exists,” said Joseph Feiman, vice president and fellow, Gartner. “This has led to the emergence of integrated application security testing (IAST) technologies that observe the running code of the application in real-time while the application is being tested. This helps to confirm or disprove the exploitability of the suspected vulnerability, and point to its origin in the application, as well as provide developers with real, actionable information like stack traces and line of code detail, so that they can fix the security problems faster and accurately.”
With the introduction of WebInspect Real-Time, users of HP application security solutions can:
Find more real vulnerabilities: HP Fortify SecurityScope, a new integrated application security testing technology that runs as part of the application being tested, enables HP WebInspect Real-Time to identify and crawl more of an application to expand the coverage of the attack surface and detect new types of vulnerabilities that can go undetected by siloed security-testing technologies. Better understand application vulnerabilities: HP WebInspect 9.1 now improves the security tester's ability to review and interact with vulnerability results through a new searchable vulnerability grid view. Fix security issues faster: By observing the running code of the application during testing through HP Fortify SecurityScope, HP WebInspect Real-Time can provide actionable details on identified issues, such as stack traces and lines of code. By confirming and removing duplicate vulnerabilities, it also eases prioritization of discovered issues.
"Fortify and HP are focused on finding and fixing security vulnerabilities in software code as early as possible in the development process," said Brian Chess, co-founder and chief scientist, Fortify Software, an HP Company. "Now through HP WebInspect Real-Time, we're able to combine static and runtime analysis with dynamic security testing in meaningful ways in a single solution, allowing our customers to find and fix these issues even earlier than before."
HP WebInspect Real-Time is now available worldwide, and consists of a bundle of HP WebInspect and HP Fortify SecurityScope.
These new security solutions are key elements of the HP Security Intelligence and Risk Management Framework, which helps businesses and governments in their pursuit of an Instant-On Enterprise.
