February 15 2010: The Information Security Forum (ISF), the world's leading independent authority on information security, has appointed Greg Garcia as Strategic Advisor for North America. Formerly the United States' first Assistant Secretary for Cyber Security and Communications with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security from 2006-2008, Garcia will support the drive to extend ISF membership to more American and Canadian companies.

In addition to targeting key sectors such as financial services, healthcare, retail, telecommunications and IT, Garcia will also work to raise further awareness of the ISF and forge new alliances with other industry groups and government bodies.

Established two decades ago, the ISF is a global not-for-profit organization comprising some 300 of the world's leading corporations and public sector bodies. In addition to providing authoritative and independent research and guidance on all aspects of information security, the ISF has developed advanced information risk methodologies and benchmarking tools.

"While many major U.S. organizations are already ISF members, I am eager to see more leading North American corporations contribute to and benefit from the ISF's unmatched portfolio of research, security tools and methodologies for advanced information security risk management," Garcia said.

"During my tenure at the Department of Homeland Security, I saw first-hand the power that market driven security standards can have on a nation's ability to neutralize cyber threats and adversaries," adds Garcia. "With a global presence, the ISF is ideally positioned to drive best practice information security into our management infrastructures."

Last year's ISF Annual World Congress in Vancouver attracted over 400 information security professionals from around the world. The event was hosted by the then ISF President Prof. Howard A. Schmidt who was recently appointed Cyber Security Coordinator by President Obama. Greg Garcia joined Howard Schmidt on a Guru Panel along with Mary Ann Davidson, Oracle's chief security officer; Bruce Schneier, BT's chief security technology officer and Alexander Seger, head of the economic crime division of the Council of Europe.
