SUNNYVALE, Calif., March 2, 2009 " Blue Coat Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: BCSI), the technology leader in Application Delivery Networking, today advanced inline malware detection of Web content with a new technology that provides businesses with granular control over open-ended Web-based applications, such as Internet radio or online broadcasts. Defer scan technology enables Blue Coat' ProxySG' appliances to intelligently defer the processing of these types of applications to ensure they do not impede the performance of business-critical applications on the network.

"The growing adoption of Web-based media applications forces businesses to reconsider how they protect their networks, particularly at the Internet gateway where response times need to be instantaneous," said Bethany Mayer, senior vice president of worldwide marketing and corporate development at Blue Coat Systems. "Blue Coat ProxySG and ProxyAV appliances enable network administrators to strike an optimal balance between network performance and Web security by utilizing intelligent control to ensure all types of Web-based content are analyzed without impacting network performance."

Blue Coat ProxySG appliances work in conjunction with Blue Coat ProxyAV appliances to provide the intelligence and control required to analyze all incoming Web content without compromising the performance of business applications managed by the Internet gateway. With the Blue Coat defer scan technology, ProxySG appliances process open-ended Web-based applications, such as streaming baseball games or radio, that maintain persistent connections until closed, freeing processing capacity on the ProxyAV appliances for critical malware detection tasks. By processing the open-ended Web stream on ProxySG appliances instead of immediately sending it to ProxyAV appliances, Blue Coat allows administrators to optimize network performance.

Removing Internet radio and other open-ended Web-based applications from the anti-malware processing queue ensures scalable malware detection, enabling network administrators to provide an additional layer of security. Legacy products that do not utilize defer scan technology force administrators to make trade-offs: Either block access to Web media content and related Websites or skip the analysis of those sites. While blocking Web content frustrates users that require access to Web-media sites, not analyzing this Web content and the sites that host it opens a door for malware infiltration. Blue Coat's defer scan technology provides the intelligent analysis to analyze all Web content accessed by users while maintaining performance at the Web gateway.

The Blue Coat ProxySG and ProxyAV appliances automatically provide the intelligence to discreetly handle each request based on object type to optimize network performance. With this granular control, network administrators can analyze all Web-based content to protect users and information from malware and malicious content.

Inline threat analysis is part of Blue Coat's proactive layers of defense, which combine a Web-based community watch service with Web filtering, policy controls, data loss prevention and remote user protection.
