Arizona Official Says Hack Of Voter Data Came Via 'Employee' Email

Arizona Secretary of State Michele Reagan said the breach of the state's voter registration system began via a realistic-looking email that appeared to be from an employee, reports CNBC. Reagan was speaking during a panel discussion at the Cambridge Cyber Summit in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and hosted by CNBC, MIT, and The Aspen Institute.

The hack of Arizona's voter registration system caused concern, as Russia-backed hackers have been quite active in the run-up to the Nov. 8 presidential election. But, said Reagan, the alleged Russian hackers only broke into the registration system and did not access the vote-tallying mechanism.

"We got lucky this time," she said.

In a later interview, Reagan elaborated on the steps the state took after the breach discovery, including taking the entire system offline. She also stressed the need for multifactor login-verification and stronger passwords.
