PRESS RELEASE

Tel Aviv, Israel & San Francisco, CA - May 7, 2015 – Twistlock  unveiled today the industry’s first security suite designed to give enterprises the visibility and control they need over their container-based applications and data. Twistlock’s breakthrough container security enables enterprises to maximize the efficiency, portability and scalability of their containers, while maintaining end-to-end security. The company also announced they received $2.5 million in seed funding, led by YL Ventures.

“YL Ventures is proud to back the first company capable of making containers, and more specifically Docker containers, secure enough for the enterprise” said Yoav Leitersdorf, managing partner for YL Ventures. “Twistlock provides the missing critical security features enterprises require before they can put containers in production environments. With the launch of Twistlock, the container market as a whole can take a huge leap forward.”

"Enterprises are in the midst of a data center revolution,” said Ben Bernstein, CEO and co-founder of Twistlock. “Twistlock’s container security suite provides the fuel enterprises need to accelerate their ability to use containers to develop, share and scale the applications that drive their business forward. With our solution, security operation teams finally have the visibility and granular controls they need over their ‘Dockerized’ workloads.”

Twistlock gives enterprises the confidence to adopt container technologies, such as Docker [www.docker.com], and deploy them in production environments, without compromising the security of the data they contain. Typically, containers represent a huge blind spot for enterprises, as security operations teams only see a virtual machine (or groups of machines) running unknown processes being accessed by large numbers of remote machines. Twistlock is the first solution that understands what’s really going on within a container or cluster of containers, illuminating who is accessing what and which processes relate to which workloads; it plugs into the control channel that manages containers to enable the intelligent inspection of containers at rest, as well as at run-time.

The suite addresses risks on the host and within the application of the container, enabling enterprises to consistently enforce security policies, monitor and audit activity and identify and isolate threats in a container or cluster of containers. With the Twistlock security suite, enterprises can:

  • Monitor both static container images and runtime container applications to identify risks.

  • Specify security baselines to ensure the host has been hardened and the application meets certain quality and security standards before it can be pushed into production.

  • Protect containers deployed both in the cloud and on-premises in a virtual data center.

  • Keep up with the dynamic security concerns associated with the continuous integration of micro services.

Twistlock was founded by Ben Bernstein and Dima Stopel, who bring extensive enterprise security expertise in both the defense and private sector; both spent more than 10 years in the Microsoft R&D center in Israel and served in the Israel Defense Force’s (IDF) intelligence corps. During their tenure they saw firsthand how new technologies can introduce gaps to an enterprise’s security stance; with the rapid rise of containers, they recognized an opportunity to help enterprises get ahead of the risks and developed the Twistlock security suite to support their secure adoption.

Twistlock is also working with the virtual container leader, Docker, and the broader ecosystem, including major operating system providers (e.g. Microsoft, Redhat), virtual data center providers (e.g. VMware, Microsoft), and cloud service providers (e.g. Google, Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Rackspace), to improve the overall security of containers through the efforts of the open source community (e.g. here, and here)
