PRESS RELEASE

Burlingame, USA – July 14, 2014 – Security expert Avira announced today that it has launched a new research and development Digital Security Lab at its US headquarters in Burlingame, Calif. Avira’s new R&D Digital Security Lab will envision and develop the next generation of security products, focusing on security issues 2-5 years in the future, especially mobile.

One of the major focal points of security’s future will be protecting the user, however or wherever he/she chooses to access the Internet. The future will continue to see the proliferation of a multi-device, multi-platform landscape that morphs into the already growing ‘Internet of Everything’.

“It is a very exciting time at Avira as we are tasked with imagining how the world of software will look to  consumers two to five years in the future, and what the online security threats will be,“ said Leon Crutchley, Director of Avira’s R&D Digital Security Lab.  “Our team will design security software concepts for the future, present the prototypes to the executive management team for evaluation and then work with our product teams to develop the prototypes with the most potential into full consumer products and bring them to market.“

Avira’s R&D Digital Security Lab is currently working on topics such as personal identification and authentication, online communications and transactions, and shaping online privacy. An early example of work from the lab can be seen in the Identity Safeguard feature developed for Avira’s iOS and Android mobile consumer applications which was announced in April.

"We designed Identity Safeguard to inform any mobile user whether their email address and identity have been hacked by any of the many security breaches that happen now on a regular basis,“ explained Crutchley.  “So far, Avira’s Identity Safeguard monitors over 160 million email addresses, including addresses from the infamous Adobe security breach, the recent Snapchat breach and all other data breaches that happen in real time across the globe."
