Guccifer to Be Extradited to US for Prison Sentence

Four-year, four-month term will follow a longer sentence in hacker's home country of Romania.

Guccifer, the hacker responsible for years of targeted cybercrime against high-profile victims in the US and abroad, will be extradited to the US for his prison sentence after completing a seven-year prison term in Romania, officials from the country ruled this week.

Guccifer, whose real name is Marcel Lazar Lehel, gained unauthorized access to – and stole data from – the email and social media accounts of about 100 Americans between Oct. 2012 and Jan. 2014. His targets included former Secretary of State Colin Powell, immediate family members of two former US presidents, former members of the US Cabinet and the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, and a former presidential adviser, the Department of Justice reported in 2016.

Guccifer pleaded guilty in 2016 and was sentenced to 52 months in prison for unauthorized access to a protected computer and aggravated identity theft. In many cases, he published his victims' private emails, medical and financial data, and personal photos, the DoJ said.

Until now, Guccifer has been in Romania serving time for breaking into accounts of government officials and public figures. When this sentence is over, he will be sent to a US prison for four years and four months.
