Trend Micro today said it has signed an agreement to acquire Third Brigade, a privately held security and compliance software company.

According to the acquisition announcement, Trend Micro is buying Third Brigade "to accelerate its dynamic datacenter security strategy, and to provide customers with access to critical security and compliance software and vulnerability response services."

The deal is expected to close in the second quarter; financial terms were not disclosed.

Third Brigade offers software in two areas of security that are hot topics across the industry: cloud computing and regulatory compliance. The acquisition will "accelerate our ongoing efforts to deliver innovative new solutions that are uniquely suited to dynamic datacenters, as they expand from physical to virtual and public/private cloud-computing environments," said Eva Chen, CEO of Trend Micro.

Third Brigade also offers a host intrusion defense system that has been integrated with the Trend Micro line during the past 18 months, the partners said.

In addition, Third Brigade and Trend Micro intend to help organizations meet PCI compliance requirements by addressing six of the 12 PCI requirements in a single, centrally managed software solution, the companies said.

Trend Micro said it is "committed to the Third Brigade existing product road map" and "will continue to offer its stand-alone products for the near term as well as gradually integrate select Third Brigade capabilities into its own products and solutions."

The Third Brigade office in Ottawa will become the new headquarters of Trend Micro Canada Technologies, operating as a subsidiary of Trend Micro U.S.
