Trojans Now 70% Of New Security Threats

Nearly three-quarters of malware is now comprised of Trojans, according to a new report from PandaLabs. The security company's figures for the quarter ending this past June showed that 70% of new malware was Trojans. There's a reason for this: Trojans work, and Trojans work because so many computers (and their users, and the businesses that use them) don't take even the most basic precautions against them.The PandaLabs quarterly security report, like most quarterly reviews in every field, doesn't contain any real shockers, but the report's threat environment overview is worth looking at to remind yourself of what you -- and, crucially, every computer user in your company or among your contractors, vendors and partners -- are up against:

70% of all newly detected malware is a Trojan

Which explains why

34.37% of infected computer were infected as a result of a Trojan getting past the computer or network's defenses (if any)

Trojans are picking up threat percentage points: Panda shows them as up almost three percent over the previous quarter.

Adware is on the rise, too, up a scary 9%, from 7.54% of new malware to nearly 17% between first and second quarters.

Malware makers are increasingly targeting small and midsized businesses businesses, which increases the pressure -- and responsibility -- for you and every one of your employees (and their families, if any of them are taking work home for use on computers used by other family members; really bad idea, by the way) to take every possible step to both protect your systems and educate their users about the threats that have them in their sights.
