Cambridge, Mass. and Redwood City, California Oct 4 , 2010—Nominum, a leading provider of Intelligent DNS (Domain Name System) solutions to service providers, enterprises and government agencies, announced today that it has partnered with StopBadware, a non-profit organization working to combat viruses, spyware, and other badware. Originally a project of Harvard University’s Berkman Center for Internet & Society, StopBadware was spun off as a standalone non-profit organization in January 2010, with the support of Google, PayPal, and Mozilla.

As part of the new partnership, Nominum, whose Intelligent DNS System protects end users from threats on the Internet in real time, will take advantage of StopBadware’s independent review process as an additional check on the validity of websites that are categorized as “confirmed bad” in Nominum’s system.

“StopBadware has a track record of helping companies effectively and responsibly protect consumers from badware,” said Nominum Chairman and Chief Scientist Paul Mockapetris, who joined the StopBadware Board of Directors last July. “This aligns with Nominum’s goal of using our advanced technology and market leadership to make the Internet safer for everyone.”

A DNS request is a necessary first step to access most resources on the Internet and with their capabilities, Nominum, whose software powers the majority of the Internet’s DNS lookups, is in a unique position to prevent end users from accessing malicious domains on a massive scale. The partnership between Nominum and StopBadware will provide website owners with a proven, open, fair, and transparent method to get their sites reviewed if they believe they should not be on a threat list. The independent review process will ensure Nominum and its customers are only blocking domains representing active threats to ISPs’ users.

Nominum’s system works in real time across any type of network (wireless, DSL, cable, fiber), and overcomes limitations of existing technology for mitigating Internet threats. It can block access to malicious domains on a massive scale and it does not require any specialized equipment or changes to the network architecture (see today’s related announcement “SKYE™ Network Protection Service Cleans up Networks”)

Later this year Nominum will become the first DNS vendor to be a StopBadware data provider, and will contribute malicious domain data gathered by its own researchers over the Nominum global network to the Badware Website Clearinghouse.
