Shifting the Security Mindset

We've all heard the idea that CISOs slow the business, Jensen says. Security is known as the department others have to bypass before they get anything done, and that's what many business owners do to the CISO. If they can get apps up and running faster without input or validation from the security team, chances are good they're going to do it despite the risks.

But what if the CISO was an agent of change? Instead of being the one who says "no" all the time, the CISO could be someone who said "yes, but let me show you a safer way to get there." Instead of known for saying "no," he or she could instead be known for doing things efficiently.

Another common misconception board members have is that cybersecurity issues can be "solved," or that "secure" is an end-state that can be achieved, Belknap says. In reality, security is a process and a cultural shift. This is a mindset that should be adopted across the boardroom.

"They can only solve the problems they are empowered to solve," says Jensen. "If they don't have a seat at the table, they won't be able to solve any of the problems beyond the table they're sitting at."
