Cybercriminals are intensifying their attacks on legitimate Web sites, according to the "Trend Micro 2007 Threat Report and Forecast," released today.Hackers are targeting trusted sites, including social-networking communities, e-stores and local government sectors, to host links to phishing and identity theft code. "The number of compromised Web sites are slowly outnumbering malicious ones created specifically by cybercriminals," Trend Micro states.

Also at risk: gadgets with wireless and storage capabilities, public access points and operating systems running legacy code.

While Trend Micro's findings are hardly groundbreaking, they help underscore the importance of a multilayered security defense against Web threats, which hold the potential to wipe out smaller, unprotected businesses.
