WASHINGTON DC, Feb. 24 " Liberty Alliance, the global identity community working to build a more trustworthy Internet for businesses, governments and people, today announced that the Internet Society (ISOC) has become a member of the Liberty Alliance Management Board. ISOC joins 2009 Liberty Alliance board members from AOL, BT, CA, Fidelity Investments, Intel, Novell, NTT, Oracle and Sun Microsystems. The management board is responsible for driving the strategic direction of Liberty Alliance on a global basis.

The Internet Society is an independent international nonprofit organization founded in 1992 to provide leadership in Internet related standards, education, and policy. As a Liberty Alliance board member, ISOC has a leadership role in ongoing Liberty Alliance collaboration activities, working with other standards bodies, industry groups and identity-related organizations, to help foster interoperability and harmonization of Internet-based initiatives, specifications and protocols.

According to Lucy Lynch, director of trust and identity initiatives, ISOC, "The Internet Society is pleased to join Liberty Alliance in promoting and developing the technical foundations of online identity and trust that will be crucial in supporting interoperable, secure and privacy-preserving applications and services on the Internet. ISOC is eager to participate in Liberty Alliance's well-established collaborative processes to help ensure that the specifications upon which these new technologies are built will promote continued innovation and serve the interests of all Internet users around the world. The discipline and experience reflected in Liberty Alliance's processes, specifically related to specification development based on clearly identified market requirements, provide an excellent platform to positively impact progress in the identity space."
