PRESS RELEASE

ARLINGTON, VA, December 7, 2009 " Gemalto, the world leader in digital security, today announced that it has surpassed 25 million smart card-based identity credentials shipped to the U.S. federal government. This total is evenly split between government identity credentials, used for securing the identities of federal government employees and military personnel and for electronic passports (ePassports), used for protecting the personal information of U.S. citizens traveling abroad.

"Gemalto is honored to be a trusted partner in providing secure identity credentials to over 25 million U.S. citizens, federal employees and military personnel," said Neville Pattinson, vice president Government Affairs Gemalto North America "We have worked diligently to ensure Gemalto's manufacturing, software and services meet the stringent security requirements of the U.S. federal government enabling citizens to obtain secure credentials that are convenient and easy to use. We are proud to be a leading part of an ever evolving identity ecosystem aimed at protecting citizen's identities and securing the homeland."

Some of Gemalto's newest innovations for the U.S. government include its next-generation PIV card, and the Smart Guardian (SG) FIPS USB Key. The new Gemalto PIV card has dual contact/contactless technology and doubles the storage capacity of previous PIV cards to handle larger encryption keys and store multiple identity certificates. Through its open platform, the card also supports adding new applications, such as biometric match-on-card, if desired. It has been approved by the General Services Administration (GSA) for use by the government and is on the approved purchase list (APL).

The smart card-based SG FIPS is a zero-footprint encrypted secure flash drive. It has achieved FIPS 140-2 Level 3 certification, and meets Military Standard 810-F environmental standards. It goes beyond security requirements to offer additional security and interoperability with federal PIV credentials.

All of Gemalto's products for the U.S. federal government come from its advanced production facility and service center in Montgomeryville, Penn. The center recently received the Security Assurance Certification from the North American Security Products Organization (NASPO), a voluntary certification further demonstrating Gemalto commitment to providing a secure U.S. based supply chain for identity products.
