Gartner Identifies Threat

Gartner has included obfuscation as part of their recommended strategy to reduce the risk of app vulnerability probing, IP theft

CLEVELAND -- PreEmptive Solutions, suppliers of the leading Enterprise Obfuscation Solution for the Microsoft .NET environment and Java, announced today that Gartner Inc. has included obfuscation as part of their recommended strategy to reduce the risk of application vulnerability probing and Intellectual Property (IP) theft.

According to Gartner, Inc. “the use of interpreted languages, such as Java and managed .NET code, makes reverse compilation a relatively simple task, providing the hacker the ability to steal intellectual property (IP) or look for security vulnerabilities,” in “Hype Cycle for Cyberthreats, 2006”, September 2006, Neil MacDonald; Amrit Williams, et al.

Gartner recommendations include “If you have IP embedded in your software applications that are distributed externally to your enterprise, use code obfuscation, encryption and randomization products to protect deployed applications from reverse engineering”.

“PreEmptive Solutions’ is the only application security provider to offer patented obfuscation technology, encryption and randomization capabilities for both the .NET Framework and Java application protection,” said Gabriel Torok, President of PreEmptive Solutions. “Our clients include 9 of the top 10 technology suppliers, 9 of the top 10 telecommunications equipment manufacturers and thousands of corporations across financial, manufacturing, life sciences and other industries that depend on .NET Framework-based and Java applications.”

“Microsoft has long recognized obfuscation as an important component of a broader best practice for application security,” said Joe Marini, Group Product Manager in the .NET Developer Marketing division at Microsoft Corp. “Beginning with the Microsoft Visual Studio 2003 development system, we have distributed obfuscation technology from PreEmptive Solutions. Microsoft remains satisfied with the high quality of obfuscation technology provided by PreEmptive Solutions’ Dotfuscator.”
