According to a breach disclosure letter from Fujitsu Consulting (PDF), the storage device was lost in transit on July 28 by an overnight courier service that was carrying it between Fujitsu's offices in New York and Montreal.
Fujitsu Consulting did not name the other companies whose data resides on the device, nor did it say whether the names were Travelers employees or customers.
Reed Smith LLP, the consulting firm's legal counsel, did not say why it took eight months for the company to reveal the leak. The attorneys did say the firm has been "diligently" searching through the data for any personally identifiable information that might be on the device.
