The migration of storage to the cloud may be the first time many small and midsized business have adequately backed up data offsite, according to a new survey from cloud storage company KineticD.The numbers from cloud service and storage provider KineticD paint a scary portrait (if also a grain-of-salt one: KineticD is, after all, pushing cloud storage and services).

According to the company's survey of 1,000 customers worldwide:

77% never backed up data offsite prior to migrating to cloud storage

23% never backed up data at all

8% backed up no more frequently than once a month

Allowing for that grain of salt -- clearly KineticD is touting the benefits of its services, and why not? -- the company's numbers for its customers bear out a story we've told here many times: Backup remains one of the largest, most important and at the same time most neglected responsibilities (sic)your business faces.

Whether or not you move your storage to the cloud -- and there are solid arguments on both sides of cloud-storage considerations -- take a moment, as soon as you can, and look at these three questions in terms of your business and its most crucial data:

1. When was the data most recently backed up?
