Rolling Meadows, IL, USA (16 July 2015)—Corporate governance processes are at a weak level of implementation at most organizations, indicating that boards of directors are not sufficiently involved, according to a new global governance study commissioned by IT association ISACA. Conducted by the University of Antwerp—Antwerp  Management School, Benchmarking and Business Value Assessment of COBIT 5 helps identify key gaps and priorities at organizations worldwide as well as how they are using the  COBIT 5 business framework for information technology.

“The findings are a call to action for board members to take responsibility for ensuring that their organization’s information and technology are effectively governed and managed,” said Steven De Haes, an author of the survey report. “There is a clear association between board involvement and strong organizational performance.”

The study results also underscore the need for a greater focus on agility.

“There is a knowing-doing gap when it comes to agility,” said Wim Van Grembergen, co-author of the report. “Executives consistently include agility on their list of priorities, but the data indicate there is little success in achieving it.”

COBIT 5 identifies seven key resources called enablers because they enable effective governance in an organization. The study found that the most poorly utilized enabler in most organizations is culture, ethics and behavior. Services, infrastructure and applications are the most effectively leveraged enabler.

“This is likely because organizations find it easier to govern more tangible resources,” said De Haes.

The study of 894 business and IT professionals provides organizations with key benchmarking information. It also demonstrates that achieving IT-related goals is directly correlated to achieving enterprise goals. The report provides insights needed to develop an effective business case for adopting COBIT 5 guidance.
