Education is indeed the key
Education is indeed the key.  All of us need to be more careful when clicking on links or trusting email.  Another important element is to teach more STEM, in America, to Americans.  We need our own citizens to be programmers, sysadmins, and engineers.  It would help to manufacture our hardware in the USA, so that we do not need to rely on other countries who may not agree with our economic or political values.

The only way to Defend against these attacks, remove the $$$
If it is made illegal to pay ransom in the US, these attacks will stop when there is no money in it.  Got hacked, so sad, restore from your offsite backups.  What, no off site backups, shutter the business...
