Interesting post, it infected the Military during that time
I was working as a consultant for the Department of Navy (BUMED) in DC. When the virus hit, I was able to unplug the email servers from the network. We found a fix on the internet that would scan through the MS Exchange srevers, but before that, the security officer in Bethesda stated that we needed to delete the entire system and start over.

Of course that comes from someone who is non-technical so I looked into the issue and found the solution on the web, we ran an application on the Exchange server, it filtered and cleaned all the messages on the server, we said delete the attachments and clean the system.

It worked pretty well but it was a headache, it was around that time, we had McAfee and Norton Antivirus running and it still got in so you know we were upset with those guys but it let us know that their software was not as good as touted.
