Possible resolutions

 

Breaking Authentication and Privilege Escalation

  • Linux - I think a lot of this can be done using SELinux and boolean parameters 

Container Hacking

  • This will be an interesting topic, the issue with containers are identified at the image level, if the image is not hardened, then I could see the potential areas of concern. Also, from a network standpoint, the virtual net can be added and changed but again, escalated privileges will be required.

Firmware and Embedded Hacking

  • Interesting, if software is installed on a vulnerable machine, it has to be executed in order for it to update the code from a firmware standpoint, this can be done in Windows (scheduler) and Linux (crontab) but the privileged level execution will be key and a reboot will be required in order for this to take place.

A number of application concerns can be thwarted using existing tools (filesystem, policy, domain, network, and apps) can help identify the potential problems associated with some of the topics covered in the BlackHat discussions. AppArmor (Application Management) and IPtables (Firewall) are other tools along with Fail2ban (IPS) can alleviate a large number of issues.
