Re: Burnt by the Stove
Ok, if a person is ignorant, how can he/she be knowledge? They could be knowledge in a particular area but not in IT security, again it goes back taking advantage of the resources and implmenting proper controls, training and quarterly simulation attacks to test where they are in the cybersecurity process (of course there are other areas like HR, Admin training, Building Security, Development/Training, CMMI coding design, etc.).

“because there are a number of organizations who they could contracted to address this problem (FireEye, Comodo, Cisco, VMware, IBM, etc). ” These organizations can help a organization to protect themselves, however it always starts with the organization itself, they need to have a mindset that they want to protect themselves.

Re: Burnt by the Stove
“This says to me there is a lack of knowledge and understanding when it comes to this type of attack” I think knowledge is there, it is just ignorance, nobody will need my data. Big trap.

“But the frequency of these attacks should provide evidence to why a sufficient data backup program is required” That is so true. Not if you are going to be attacked, you will be or you already have been.

“I find that many wont reform their bad habits until they themselves are burnt by the stove. Its the mindset ” This is exactly true. Until get hit not understanding true importance of being protected from attacks.

ransomware
Sometime if you have insurance paying ransomware is cheaper than trying to recover data with your own resources.

Re: Burnt by the Stove
I agree, look at Atlanta, Baltimore and other  areas in Florida. This says to me there is a lack of knowledge and understanding when it comes to this type of attack
Quote - "Baltimore and two cities in Florida have fallen victim to ransomware in recent weeks, and Atlanta's mayor advocated for more federal help in protecting against ransomware in Congress Tuesday. Atlanta and Baltimore are each spending spend millions on the clean-up from their attacks. In Florida, Riviera Beach paid $600,000 and Lake City almost $500,000 to get their data unlocked, according to representatives from those cities."

The mayor from Atlanta stated that she needed more federal assistance in addressing the problem. I am not sure if that is the case, because there are a number of organizations who they could have contracted to address this problem (FireEye, Comodo, Cisco, VMware, IBM, etc). To the point Ryan made, they are only willing to do something if they have been burned (this sounds similar to OPM, but that is for another conversation).

Burnt by the Stove
I find that many wont reform their bad habits until they themselves are burnt by the stove. Its the mindset "This won't happen to me" that sinks them. But the frequency of these attacks should provide evidence to why a sufficient data backup program is required.

The 10 Most Impactful Types of Vulnerabilities for Enterprises Today
Managing system vulnerabilities is one of the old est - and most frustrating - security challenges that enterprise defenders face. Every software application and hardware device ships with intrinsic flaws - flaws that, if critical enough, attackers can exploit from anywhere in the world. It's crucial that defenders take stock of what areas of the tech stack have the most emerging, and critical, vulnerabilities they must manage. It's not just zero day vulnerabilities. Consider that CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog lists vulnerabilitlies in widely used applications that are "actively exploited," and most of them are flaws that were discovered several years ago and have been fixed. There are also emerging vulnerabilities in 5G networks, cloud infrastructure, Edge applications, and firmwares to consider.
