The DDoS Smokescreen
Such upticks in DDoS activity should also be looked at in the context of a smokescreen.  It's widely recognized that DDoS attacks can often be distractions from acts of fraud and theft that can either be covered up by the fruits of DDoS attacks, or at a minimum cause enough distraction to keep eyes off the crimes.

If your network is suffering these attacks, put eyes to as many other areas of vulnerability as possible in case there is more to the attacks than meets the eye.

DDoS
DDoS are utilized most often because of the lack of complexity required to carry out this type of attack. Volumetric being the most simple, I am not surprised to see an uptick of this type.
