Re: Phishing and Drive By Downloads
Even scarier is that there are downloadable kits that can craft believable phishing emails that carry customizable payloads. Ransomware is certainly method of reaping quick payoffs. It won't be long before news breaks out that not only has data been encrypted, but also stolen, and exposed after the ransom has been paid.

Re: Phishing and Drive By Downloads
That would be interesting. I also think a major factor as to why it is so widely used is complexity. Even the most non-experienced hacker can craft a decent phishing attempt due to the simplicity. The important part is what did they pack into it? It seems like for the present the one two punch is social engineering into a ransomware campaign.

Re: Phishing and Drive By Downloads
It is far more effective than any other method an attacker can use, simply because it exploits people - by far, the weakest link in any cybersecurity chain. I would like to see statistical data regarding breaches and attack methods; I'm willing to bet that social engineering far outpaces other methods.

Phishing and Drive By Downloads
Phishing is an effective mechanism. It can target non-security oriented employees and, potentially through the employees actions (clicking a link or attachment), can circumvent many security safeguards.
