I apologize if my first post was unclear. I understand the technique behind malvertising. I was more concerned with in what sector this is most prevalent (financial, retail, government, etc) or is it consistent across the board?

The scope of malvertising all depends on Users' web activity within a corporation, how content filtering and NIPS are affectively applied. As I have stated before in previous post in regards to ransomeware, files are targeted and encrypted solely based on known file extenstions. It is not yet sophisticated enough to anaylize actual MIME type headers to these files. Renaming files to obscure extensions and reassociating these files to their proper application would not be affected by such ransomware such as CryptoWall.

Where has this technique been the most prevalent? IE, who is being targeted most often by industry sector?
