Card PII circumvent idea
Would using a VISA (or other reloadable) debit card have eased the credit card aspect of your PII risks? Several retailers sell reloadable debit cards (though I have no idea how travel-payment-friendly they are) from AMEX, VISA, MasterCard, etc.
