Re: Thermostats
Security by Obscurity is practiced on a broad scale by many industries, even though by today's best practices model, it's considered No Security at all.

Re: Thermostats
How silly -- especially if the contracts aren't making considerations for those that require them to front some of the security costs.  My two cents, anyway.

Re: Thermostats
@Joe Stanganelli, their suppliers (oil companies) and partners (environmental compliance monitoring) require them, from what I understand.

Re: Thermostats
Which brings up the question: Why the heck are they using any sort of modern "smart" gas system that has Internet/satellite connection if they can't afford the proper security for it?  Since when do you NEED the ditgab Internet for a gas pump?!?!?!?

The "smarter" the devices become, the stupider people get.

Re: Thermostats
Thanks, Kelly. There is a business opportunity here then. Sort of like the way public cloud helps small businesses compete with larger ones. Bring secure IoT to small businesses at a cheap price. I guess that's hard work, but it is good work.

Re: Thermostats
I'm sure that we are only scratching about  security (or lack of security) surrounding the Internet of Things. Kelly's point about small businesses -- like a mom & pop convenient store or gas station -- being the most vulnerable is absolutely true. On the other hand, perhaps the small busineses would be less of a target for hackers.

Re: Thermostats
This is indeed a common theme of Internet of Things things, and more importantly, of industrial systems things.

One reason for the vulnerability of these smaller gas stations is that they don't have the private WAN connections and satellite links larger gas station chains use--it's a financial issue, so they use a cheaper network connection/setup. I didn't go into this in the story, but this is a point that Jack Chadowitz brought up when I interviewed him.

Even major government systems are not immune.  See, e.g., pastebin.com/Wx90LLum

Re: Thermostats

Dave agreed. I wonder how many of the gas station owners are aware of the vulnerability and just don't think it's an issue versus those that are completely unaware.

Everything You Need to Know About DNS Attacks
It's important to understand DNS, potential attacks against it, and the tools and techniques required to defend DNS infrastructure. This report answers all the questions you were afraid to ask. Domain Name Service (DNS) is a critical part of any organization's digital infrastructure, but it's also one of the least understood. DNS is designed to be invisible to business professionals, IT stakeholders, and many security professionals, but DNS's threat surface is large and widely targeted. Attackers are causing a great deal of damage with an array of attacks such as denial of service, DNS cache poisoning, DNS hijackin, DNS tunneling, and DNS dangling. They are using DNS infrastructure to take control of inbound and outbound communications and preventing users from accessing the applications they are looking for. To stop attacks on DNS, security teams need to shore up the organization's security hygiene around DNS infrastructure, implement controls such as DNSSEC, and monitor DNS traffic
