PRESS RELEASE

NEW YORK, May 23, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Because defending institutional data against attack depends equally on cyber security experts as well as executives who command management and technical skills, Polytechnic Institute of New York University (NYU-Poly) is introducing a management track to its award-winning master's degree in cyber security. The first classes begin this summer.

"We created the management track in response to calls from industry for highly qualified executives with strong technical knowledge," said NYU-Poly Computer Science and Engineering Professor Nasir Memon."It will prepare graduates to manage a team of cyber-security personnel as well as a command of the business acumen to secure information in line with company objectives." Memon, who leads the school's cyber security program, is an internationally respected expert in information assurance and has been awarded research grants exceeding $15 million.

Tailored for professionals with strong technical backgrounds interested in managing computer security, the management track curriculum comprises three courses worth nine credit hours.

It covers fundamentals of information security management including risk management, legal issues, policy and operational best practices, as well as business principles driving security decisions. It integrates state-of the-art information on security technology with insightful management techniques. Industry experts explore how to close vulnerability gaps left by developers, system managers, company personnel, customers and unknown outside forces. Those who complete the program will be capable of assuming positions such as information technology (IT) risk manager, IT security manager, and chief information security officer.

The program is available on NYU-Poly's Brooklyn campus as well as worldwide from the school's e-learning unit, NYU-ePoly. Last November, the Sloan Consortium (Sloan-C), the country's most prominent association of academic institutions in online higher education, recognized NYU-Poly's cyber security virtual degree as the nation's "Outstanding Online Program." More than half of students in NYU-Poly's cyber security master's degree program are enrolled in its online courses.

NYU-Poly's cyber security program is a widely recognized center of excellence in information assurance and cyber security. Its faculty record in research and teaching is among the most impressive in the nation, with numerous National Science Foundation and other research awards, editorial positions on principal research journals, significant innovative patents and key posts at national and international scholarly societies.

The program has been named a National Security Agency/Department of Homeland Security (NSA/DHS) Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education (CAEIAE) as well as a Center of Academic Excellence in Research (CAE-R). NSA and DHS jointly sponsor CAEIAE and CAE-R to reduce vulnerability in the national information infrastructure by promoting higher education and research. NYU-Poly's cyber security curriculum meets the National Training Standards NSTISSI-4011 (National Training Standard for Information Systems Security -- INFOSEC -- Professionals), CNSSI-4013 (National Information Assurance Training Standard for System Administrators - SA) and CNSSI-4016 (National Information Assurance Training Standard for Risk Analysts) as set by the Committee on National Security Systems.
