A global survey of IT and business professionals by Dell reveals a lack of awareness about the European Union’s new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) slated for May 2018: 97% of companies say they have no plan in place to prepare for its enactment.

GDPR, which is designed to protect EU citizens from data theft, will impact all organizations and penalize those who don't follow it.

Although 82% of global IT and business pros are concerned about GDPR compliance, almost 70% indicate a lack of preparedness by their company. More than 80% say they know little about it, and less than one in three say they are prepared today. Within Europe, Germany is most prepared (44%), while 75% outside Europe are ill-prepared.

If GDPR were in place today, some 21% say they would be penalized for non-compliance, and almost 25% say they would be forced to undergo major changes. Less than half of those interviewed say they were well-prepared for the security disciplines effecting GDPR, but more than 90% believe they would not satisfy the requirements.

Dell says GDPR compliance can be achieved by adopting certain measures including hiring a data protection officer, restricting access, and ensuring email security.
