Malvertising 
Malvertising has a greater overall impact during the holiday season as brands ramp up their spending toward the end of the year, Confiant's Dangu explains.
'Malvertisers are opportunistic and adapt their activities to take advantage of circumstances,' he continues. 'As long as they see ROI, their business model is to invest money in order to reach users and monetize on the result.' This could be data, affiliation fees, or infected devices.
This business model works best during the holidays, Dangu says, as the message is more likely to spread to unsuspecting shoppers who can fall for them. Big e-commerce days mean more people are online than usual, increasing the success rate for scammers.
During the 2018 Thanksgiving holiday, Confiant detected and blocked 20 million sessions from three unrelated attacks, each on different ad exchanges. While the attackers had been around for months, they waited to focus their efforts on the holiday weekend - betting ad operation teams would be less available to troubleshoot problems.
