Facebook Doles Out $100K for Internet Defense Prize

Winners developed a new method of detecting spearphishing in corporate networks.

A team of researchers today was awarded a $100,000 prize from Facebook for their work in detecting spearphishing attacks.

Facebook awarded its Internet Defense Prize award to Grant Ho, University of California, Berkeley; Aashish Sharma, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory; Mobin Javed, University of California, Berkeley; Vern Paxson, University of California, Berkeley and International Computer Science Institute; and David Wagner, University of California, Berkeley, who authored Detecting Credential Spearphishing Attacks in Enterprise Settings.

The researchers came up with a method of detecting spearphishing in corporate networks that doesn't trigger a large number of false positive alerts, according to Facebook.
