Data Aggregators are Big Targets

When: Feb. 2019

Breach Details: Verifications.io, a company that provided email verification services for organizations, left a Mongo database containing over 808 million records publicly accessible to anyone with an Internet connection. The four sets of data in the databases contained email addresses, dates of birth, phone numbers, physical address, employer information, IP addresses, business leads, and other information. Not all of the records contained sensitive data, but millions of them did. Verifications.io-believed to be located either in Boca Raton, or in Estonia, appears to be no longer operational - at least under the same name.

Lessons Learned: Organizations that aggregate large volumes of data will always be targets, however low-profile they might appear to be to the public. "Sectors that are in the middle of big things, including advertising, legal, accounting, shipping, and more, must no longer rely on security by their obscurity," said Tom Patterson, chief trust officer at Unisys. "Global adversaries know who they are, and they now have a cyber-target painted on their logo."

Cloud data security is a huge concern
Great article. We can all learn from the mistakes made in these big breaches. In particular, I agree that there is continued concern about the risks of cloud storage. In a recent survey, 48% of organizations that store sensitive data in the cloud would consider moving that data back on premises. To best secure data in the cloud, it's important to know just how much data you have, who has access to it and which data is most critical in your IT environment, so you can prioritize your security efforts.
