Google Workspace Adds Client-Side Encryption

Users given control over encryption keys, Google says.

Google now offers client-side encryption for its Google Workspace applications - formerly known as G Suite - that allows users to control their own encryption keys. 

"With Client-side encryption, customer data is indecipherable to Google, while users can continue to take advantage of Google's native web-based collaboration, access content on mobile devices, and share encrypted files externally," the company wrote in a blog post today announcing the new feature.

Google said client-side encryption is in part aimed at regulated industries that store sensitive information, such as healthcare records and financial data. 

In a statement posted in the announcement, Andrew Plunkett, Airbus's head of Digital Workplace, said his company currently uses the feature for its Google Workspace apps. 

"Client-side encryption is a cornerstone of our modern information governance strategy," he said.
