Adobe has taken a step toward a more secure PDF with a preview of Adobe Acrobat DC Protected Mode. The preview is available to Windows users running Adobe Acrobat DC version 20.009.20063.281938 or higher.
Protected Mode has been available in standard versions of Adobe Acrobat Reader since 2010. This is the first time that it has been made available as part of Adobe's DC, the desktop product related to a service often used within large organizations for document storage and sharing.
Adobe explained that Protected Mode, which opens documents in a security sandbox, is not turned on within Adobe DC by default because doing so could break existing customer policies or application integrations. The company has provided instructions for turning on the preview along with a request that customers share any problems or issues with the development team.
